The Child Support Grant offered by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) aims to assist caregivers in raising children by providing financial support. To qualify for this grant, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Must have Primary Caregiver Status

You must serve as the child’s primary caregiver, whether as a parent, grandparent, or a child over 16 heading a family. If you’re not the child’s parent, proof of primary caregiving is necessary through various means, such as affidavits or school-related documentation.

2. Must be a Citizen or Resident of South Africa

Eligibility for Child Support Grant (CSG) extends to South African citizens or permanent residents only.

3. Must have Limited Income

If single, your annual income should not exceed R52,800, while for married individuals, the combined income threshold is R105,600 annually.

4. Child must meet the Requirements

The child you care for should be under 18 years old, living with you, and not residing in a state institution. Additionally, the child must be under your care without any form of payment.

5. Must be Aware of Grant Limitations

Both the caregiver and child must reside in South Africa to qualify for this grant.

6. Must Fulfill the Means Test Requirements

The applicant and spouse must meet the requirements of the means test. The government only wants to pay grants to the poorest people. People who earn enough money of their own, will not be given a grant. And so the government tests or checks your income (your “means”) to make sure that you really do need a grant. Learn more about the CSG means test in detail here.

The Child Support Grant aims to provide essential financial aid to caregivers ensuring the welfare and upbringing of children in South Africa.
